Southern Arizona’s Powered Wig Machine, (a.k.a) PWM, began crafting heavy,
stoner-flavored desert rock in 2006. PWM is essentially a band of musical
jokesters, using tuned-down classic-rock riffs, humorous lyrics, and killer jazz
inspired percussion grooves to deliver pure American desert man rock. Their
oddball name spawns from track seven on Josh Homme’s (Queens of the Stoneage)
The Desert Sessions Volume 9 album. And…no these guys don’t jam tunes about
ladies hair pieces or the art of wig manufacturing. When you listen to their
style of music, the name just seems to fit like a codpiece with leather pants
ensemble.
PWM’s influences include modern-day stoner
rock bands like Clutch, Queens of the Stoneage, Eagles of Death Metal, Monster
Magnet, and Fu Manchu. They also have a tendency to derive ideas from the
haunting chants and melodic rhythms of Tool. Mixing the distinct sounds of all
these influences has been a sure fire way to cook up a recipe for a badass band
like PWM.
PWM’s lineup includes lead singer/guitarist
Wayne Rudell, guitarist Brian Gold, bassist Joey Rudell, and drummer Daniel 'the
ranchero' Graves. These dudes are all Arizona natives and have been playing
together as a group since 2001. PWM is what happens when a UPS Driver,
Engineer, Network Administrator, and Concrete Mason get together in a room with
a few beers and a couple guitars.
Their debut EP, Bearded Goddess (released Jan 31, 2009)…is a cocktail of
classic-meets-hard rock, metal, with punk aggression lit up with comical lyrics
and solar-plexus-punch vocals. Much of the entertainment is in the lyrics, which
indulge in tales of macho, red-neck, mullet laden men racing camaros and boxing
with Superman, time-traveling gunslingers shooting at mobs of zombies in
parallel universes, executing killer wrestling moves on ninjas while finding a
Korean Jesus, and women so sexy their beauty kills like Steven Segal. The song
titles: “Mullet Man”, “Led Masquerade”, “Death By Suplex”, “Recipe For Badass”
and "Uhh Sexy,” are in themselves strange, amusing, and laced with
testosterone.
At
present, the band is in the studio finishing up the remainder of Bearded
Goddess planned for release in the summer of 2009. The full length album
will include new tracks “Sister Fister”, “Bearded Goddess”, and “Bang Your Head
to Odd Meter.” This album is sure to be a strange, category-evading rock record,
a disc chock full of meaty, manly grooves that grind. Look for it soon on
iTunes and CDBaby.
