The Bros. Marler moved to Athens,
Georgia in 1996 in search of an artistically driven southern community. Both are University of Georgia graduates (Philosophy&History). The twin siblings, born June 18th 1974 (Gemini) were raised in an enthusiastically musical family with their mother a piano teacher and father a writer. Although the brothers were raised on a steady diet of the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and Motown their family's musical roots go all the way back to 1905 when their great grandfather Great Grandfather, Moses Lee Mann, opened the Sacred Harp Music School in Alabama. Due largely to this, the entire family for generations was expected to either play an instrument or sing like an angel. Another major influence that can be heard in the songwriting styles of the Bros. Marler is their father's fondness for oral narration. Being a storyteller and writer himself, he often carried his sons with him when performing his own stories (mostly southern folk) at festivals, schools, and libraries all over the south. Daniel and Drew also had the privilege of taking guitar as an elective at the high school that they attended under the care of jazz guitar genius Robert Winfield Orr (The Jazz Babies). Although Daniel soon joined the school's jazz band and later received a jazz performance scholarship at LBW, and Drew focused mostly on his solo acoustic style and songwriting, the two brothers shared a passion for all styles of music. Some of the influences heard on the CD are: Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Wilson Pickett, The Cure, Otis Redding, Jane's Addiction, Ween, Morphine, Tom Petty, The Pixies, Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Marvin Gaye, The Afghan Whigs, Elliot Smith, Johnny Cash, Beck, The Black Crows, Sonic Youth, and an enormous amount of Athens, Ga local music.
After an east to west coast excursion and a considerable amount of college radio as well as indie label attention (One Deaf Ear, Maryland) The Bros. decided that the best thing to do would be to start from scratch and record new songs at a new studio, with a new engineer and try to release this one independently. After taking some time out to play with other bands and pursue other avenues of creativity the Bros. Marler embarked on their new CD. Featuring strong musicality, and a multitude of styles, the new CD explores the depth of the brothers song writing with intricate harmonies blended with a roots heritage that is made its own. The CD has been mastered by Jeff Capurso in October 2006 (Chase Park Transduction) and is pressed and ready for distribution. Everyone involved is excited and proud of their efforts. Keep your eyes and ears peeled
The CD titled, naturally: Songs for Pluto. Stepping away from the jam scene, the CD is focuses more on creative song writing, strong harmonies, versatility and strong musicality. “ The brothers have their own style ”(Flagpole magazine) which is an amalgam of all their influences that “ succeeds quietly, with simplicity, understatement and subtlety.” Songs for Pluto, “ display poise and impressive versatility, sharing time on lead and rhythm guitar, stripped-down drums, piano, harmonica, and bass&.this approach combined with the boy’s soul-inspired, almost Dylanesque, double-vocal
styling's, create an entertaining album rich with character and style.” (Performer Music magazine.) Contacts:
