Todd Helvig CD Release for “Distill”
Todd Helvig is a ground-breaking acoustic singer/songwriter from the Denver area. His music is probably best describe as acoustic folk songs with alternative/indie rock arrangements. When combined with a voice that has often been compared to Geoff Tate, he has found his music frequently classified as “power folk.” Todd is currently promoting his most recent solo album, titled “Distill,” which refers to the stripped down sound of his solo acoustic performances: simply his voice and his guitar. It is a raw compilation of live recordings from this prolific artist that denote the pure essence of song-writing. This is Todd’s 3rd and most ambitious solo album. It is his fourth album (prior album as frontman for Cellophane) he has produced in the last three years.
With thought provoking and sometimes heart-breaking lyrics, Todd takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions through a complex world. Whether exploring the plight of a woman experiencing domestic violence in “Better Days,” grasping to hold onto a troubled relationship in “Petrified,” or exploring the consequences of making a poor choice in “Prison Song,” Todd’s powerful voice and verse enable you to see the world through another’s eyes. Powerful themes of hope and love are also prevalent as seen in the spare but beautiful “Everything I Need” and “I Believe in Love.” The one track on the CD that isn’t purely acoustic is a catchy, melodic tune titled “Tap the Flow” which brings to mind the early Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Todd has been promoting “Distill” throughout the Denver area and was honored to be asked to play again at the 2007 Capitol Hill People’s Fair in Denver, where he showcased his new tunes. He also recently played the 2007 Golden Fine Arts Festival and KRFC‘s Live @ Lunch (88.9FM) where he was interviewed with about the art of song-writing in addition to a showcase of a live performance. His music has been featured on internet radio including BUM Radio (Best Unheard Music) and Acoustic & Mellow. Distill can be found through such mediums as CDbaby and iTunes, as can his critically-acclaimed 2006 album “A Stones Throw.” Music from Todd’s former band Celophayne and Todd’s first solo project “The Teachings of Mu Arae” can be found on Cdbaby at www.cdbaby.com/all/tmhelvig.

| Biography:
Todd Helvig is what happens when a powerhouse rock voice is paired with an acoustic guitar. He is a Midwestern singer/songwriter with his roots in the heart of America. Nothing says that more than his style of songwriting which blends (or bends) the genres of Folk, Americana, and Acoustic Rock. A self-taught musician, Todd grew up on a steady diet of classic rock sprinkled with the occasional hair-band. As his relationship with music grew, a variety of musicians along the lines of Leadbelly, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Joni Mitchell, and Ani Difranco had a tremendous influence on the way he listened to and wrote music. Similar to these artists, Todd’s distinctive sound stems from a combination of intense, evocative lyrics, powerful vocals, and a rhythmic guitar style. As an independent artist, Todd has produced four albums over the last three years. Although he has had the pleasure of working with a few local (Denver) artists such as Michael (Mickey) Geer, Eric Spencer, Greg Murray, and Global Sound Studios, the majority of Todd’s growing collection of music has been produced, performed, recorded, and promoted independently. Currently, Todd performs live along the front range of the Rockies in various intimate coffeeshop/bar settings. By way of his live sets, website (www.toddhelvig.com), CDBaby.com, internet radio stations, and digital distributors (i.e., iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster), word is getting out: Just listen and you'll understand.
In 2006, Todd played the local Colorado stages of Denver’s C.H.U.N. Capitol Hill’s Peoples Fair, Ft. Collin’s Everyday Joes, MHCD’s Market with a Heart, The Golden Fine Arts Festival, and KRFC’s (88.9 FM) Live @ Lunch, along with numerous smaller venues. Music from his prior release (A Stones Throw Ó 2006, Todd Helvig) has drawn attention from internet radio stations such as Best Unheard Musicians (B.U.M. radio), Whole Wheat Radio (Alaska), theacousticstage.net (UK), as well as NewArtistRadio.net.
2007 finds Todd having just put the finishing touches on his current project entitled: Distill. It is a simple yet stirring compilation of live recordings committed to exposing the raw energy of songwriting. The album is now available on Todd’s website, and through www.cdbaby.com/all/tmhelvig. Upcoming 2007 performances include: A return to Denver’s C.H.U.N. Capitol Hill People’s Fair on June 3rd; A solo performance at the Highland area’s Common Grounds on July 14th; A CD release party for Distill at Capuvino on July 21st; And a return to Ft. Collin’s KRFC’s Live @ Lunch on August 7th.
what the press says:
Todd Helvig - Distill (2007)
"I've saved Todd for last because... well this type of artist can be really hard to describe. He has a classic rock voice. But his songs are far from that. They are passionate acoustic pieces that don't draw us in with hooks, but with the... passion (there's that word again). It almost feels like these are classic rock and roll songs turned acoustic. Bring on the band and you blow out the doors. But I like it better this way. Todd bares his soul for us, and you don't get that with leather and two drum kits. I'm willing to bet that he is one to see in concert. If you're in the Colorado area, you can check him out live, otherwise, you can pick up his CDs at http://www.toddhelvig.com."

Bill (aka Dark) of New Artist Radio had this to say about Todd’s sound: “Todd’s music is a wonderful blend of acoustic/rock with a fresh lighthearted sound blowing through your soul like a wind in the rocky mountains. The vocals on this cd are without a doubt some of the best I have ever heard.“ Read more of this review at: www.newartistradio.net/cdreviews/dark/todd_helvig-a_stones_throw.htm
"Todd Helvig is the young Bob Dylan of our day, writing songs of substance and passion; they have the ability to evoke deep emotion. With his compelling vocals, you will find yourself humming these tunes all day long. Todd is an inspiration to the songwriting community!" ~Mike Worthington (the 10PM band).
"...you have to be there to catch the subtlety. Any of you who have Scandinavian roots will understand. Todd's vocal bands are stretched to the max...a huge thoracic breath is carrying the anguished message blocks away. But when he gets to the redemption phrase - his voice drops to a high energy softness.
The Scandinavians invented the understatement.” ~Paul's Modest Musings.
