The band name “Pirahna” is expanded from the word “prana” which means “life source or vital energy”. That being said, Pirahna
offers a powerful uplifting perspective coupled with hard hitting
instrumentation that is equal part stirring and raucous. You won't find any
fluff in their artistic and inspirational style of modern rock, but instead
you may be reminded of some of the great rock movements of our time.
Pirahna's sound skirts the fine line between radio friendly arena rock and soulful alternative rock oozing with message.
Pirahna was founded in late 2008 when long time bandmates, Nathan (vox) and Spade (bass), who also share similar musical tastes, committed to creating their own music and subsequent band. San Antonio phenom Randy Toman was at the top of their list of guitarists they felt could make Pirahna work. They were right, as the trio began writing songs that they loved and were confident would turn some heads. In late 2009 the founding members of Pirahna welcomed a new drummer Jason "Shakes" West to the group which allowed them to step up their live performances and also to be more versatile as the group began playing the cover band scene in SA. Shakes is a veteran drummer, formerly with regional juggernaut Pitbull Daycare, and he has toured Europe with Sebastian Bach (Skid Row).
Pirahna is fronted by San Antonio native Nathan Alvarado who honed his vocal and performance chops on the local cover band scene. Like most lyricists, Alvarado draws from his personal experiences to craft his part of a song. However, he is mindful to include the unifying spiritual themes of love, eternal truth, and awakening. Alvarado's melodies are revealed atop the exceptional musical foundation of guitarist Randy Toman, bassist Steve Coronado (Spade), and newest addition, drummer Jason West (Shakes). Pirahna isn't afraid to allow the creative and skillful instrumentation of its players to develop and even dominate a track. This all indeed makes Pirahna's music for the masses.
Some notable Pirahna shows include opening for touring acts King's X, Earshot, and tribute band Lez Zeppelin.
Description: PIRAHNA rocks the house, hard. Their 3-song EP is full of power licks and in your face vocals. With elements of metal and harsh tones of pop, the disc screams with crossover potential. It's that killer guitar work that leaves you wanting more.
