“Would you live in a world where you don’t have a say?”
Andrew Jackson rises out of the old rock and roll tradition to deliver Feral Familiar, his remarkable debut album filled with crunching guitar and songs of freedom, revolution, and badassness. Feral Familiar is Jackson’s musical commentary on the world in which we live, rolling on an untamed tide of modern rock tinged with passionate, genuine lyrics personalized for the inspiration and impact of today’s audiences.
Canadian-born Jackson’s love for rock began at an early age, growing up listening to Led Zeppelin, Guns n Roses, Pink Floyd, as well as the music of the old Blues legends. Carrying the guitar in his hands since the age of twelve, Jackson has been writing songs since he can remember, refusing to adhere to any set of songwriting rules other than his own. Also an accomplished visual artist, Jackson relates his method of songwriting to creating art: “When you paint, you slowly add layers until the work finds its form. Songwriting, for me, is a very similar process.”
In this vein, Jackson adopts a new writing style for each of his songs on Feral Familiar, creating an audible exposition that hooks from start to finish and well into replay. Feral Familiar was recorded live at Iguana Studios in Toronto and The Factory in Vancouver with notable producer John Nazario (Nelly Furtado, Jack Johnson, The Tea party), bringing Jackson’s exciting vision to the airwaves. Also incorporating classical interludes and tightly crafted word play into fifteen tracks, Feral Familiar is a refreshing continual play album of the Dark Side of the Moon tradition that is prepared to stir ears and minds into consciousness.
Andrew Jackson‘s gamut of musical influences adds to the diversity of Feral Familiar. Songs like “Big Baby” and “Enough Blood to Keep Em Coming” surge with Muddy Waters’ delta blues and vintage riffs similar to the music of the White Stripes. Jackson’s signature growl in “Mother Nature” hails to Billy Idol and Ian Astbury of The Cult, while tracks like “Hold On” are soaring, doo-wop rock ballads that punctuate the march of Feral Familiar and attest to Jackson’s innovative originality. The diversity of Jackson’s musical influences, much like the artist himself, plainly resists sublimation.
Praised by a growing legion of fans and radio stations alike, Andrew Jackson is fast approaching his rightful position as an artist to watch on the rock scene. He will soon be touring the world as well as releasing work from a new project in 2011, which will fuse a club vibe into the rock of his successful debut.
In a world of mixed messages and mind control, Feral Familiar is a crusading reminder of the untamed nature within us.

Release:
andrewjackson. is the musical identity of of J. Andrew -- a Toronto-born songwriter who began playing guitar at the age of twelve and has been writing songs since he was a teenager. Always intrigued by music of every type, J found inspiration in everything from Mozart to eighties electronic and classic rock. His life experiences and ability to find musical influence from such a wide variety of genres became the foundation of his well received debut album, Feral Familiar.
The album indeed does combine many genres, such as Rock, Blues, pop, and AC40. Certainly the main thrust of this album is rock, and it can be defined as a classic rock album, updated and personalized for today’s audience with the eclectic influences that so define J. Andrew. And those influences as expressed throughout the fifteen tracks of Feral Familiar include but are far from limited to Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, AC/DC, the Cult, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Jeff Buckley, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Guns 'n Roses, Jazz and Blues Legends of old like Bird, Miles, Muddy and Albert King, as well as ZZ Top and Heart.
Feral Familiar is a completely original album and all tracks were written by J himself. Not having adhered to any set rules or process, but rather admitting with pride that his songwriting style was “completely different for each song”, J explains that, for instance the track “Mother Nature” was composed inside of his head while his strumming arm was in a sling, whereas “Eugene Nixon” is the result of piecing together sounds and ideas that had accumulated on his pocket recorder, and “Hold On” was written in a flash while sitting with his guitar looking out at the rain.
As the songwriter and performer is also an accomplished painter, he compares songwriting to his artistic endeavors: “When you paint, you slowly add layers until the work finds its form. Songwriting, for me, is a very similar process”
Those layers exhibit a unique sonic presence on Feral Familiar, which was recorded live off the floor at Iguana Studios in Toronto and The Factory in Vancouver. J worked with notable producer John Nazario (Nelly Furtado, Jack Johnson, The Tea Party) to help bring his vision of a crusading and fully original rock influenced debut album to life. The result is a debut that encapsulates the themes of freedom, revolt and spirituality. Energetic and urgent, Feral Familiar has a raw, almost vintage audio feel and production style that is reminiscent of The White Stripes.
J’s interest in world politics and the history of civilizations have prompted trips to Europe, Indonesia, Thailand (where he rocked a very inspired solo version of “Mother Nature” during an open stage), Mexico and South America. It was during his travels that J felt that he needed to transpose his experiences into music and create a legendary rock record filled with internationally inspired passion and insight.
Returning to Ontario in early 2009, J wrote a handful of new songs while staying alone in a cabin on the frozen and barren Georgian Bay. During those few weeks of solitude he conceived his new songs (“Eugene Nixon,” “Enough Blood To Keep 'Em Coming,” “Another Day Of Misery'” and “Big Baby”) as the core of the album. With their striking lyrics and radio friendly melodies, he knew that they were a perfect centerpiece for the new album that was then just forming in his thoughts and creative consciousness. Together, the songs – and four well placed interludes – flow seamlessly from the start of the record to the end, in the spirit of the great rock records of the seventies.
Feral Familiar is an awakening journey, a lucid behind the scenes look at the struggles of the human race. Hidden within the wordplay, surging guitars and driving rhythms, there lies the unique and powerful musical and lyrical inspiration that J. Andrew has conceived as a key to unlock minds and inspire a new philosophy.
As J is constantly looking to incorporate and focus on different genres in his evolving musical journey, he is preparing new material for a 2011 release that features a distinct and remarkable club vibe while maintaining a background of distorted electric guitar!
J. Andrew is planning a tour based on the global response to Feral Familiar. Honduras will welcome his performances next June and plans are being made for a live performance in Florida by his growing legions of fans there. As Feral Familiar makes its musical and lyrical impact on the world, its creator plans to perform across the globe, presenting new material along with new interpretations of the solidly successful songs of Feral Familiar.
And with critical reactions such as that of radio host James Cox of Tampa FL"... I have been listening to your CD in the car ...it's AWESOME! My Son has started singing Another Day of Misery, now he has a guitar and wants to do music like you. My brother-in-law thinks that your music is awesome!" it is clear that J Andrew is a composer and performer who will meet with great success, and that this bright future has begun with the release of Feral Familiar.
