Marsyas Complex, Covers The Whole Genre Of Rock, From Hardcore To Ballads Print
Thursday, 23 June 2011
In 2009, Marsyas Complex was originally known as Bad Influence. The original members included John Banks Jr. (lead guitar), Luke Garcia (bass) and Terry Lynn (drummer). They were a simple jam band that evolved into a serious group, dead set on success. In April 2010, Terry had to leave the band due to family related issues. In stepped John Duncan who filled that position. These three individuals knew what they had in store for them. They needed to rock the house like a large band would. So they planned big, wrote big and played big. The sound they developed was the sound that was comparable to a full on 5 piece band. They played with years of knowledge, plenty of creativity, and determination. As an example, to create a fuller rhythm section sound, John Banks Jr. added more licks to his guitar parts, Luke Garcia incorporated more scales to the bass lines and, JD took on those drums with powerhouse intensity. With their new sound came a new band name; Marsyas Complex. This name has its own mythological story behind it and it’s quite an interesting one, based on the Greek myth of the satyr, Marsyas, and how he challenged the God, Apollo, to a musical duel. However, to this group, Marsyas Complex is the state of mind that they feel they are good enough to challenge the gods.

Another interesting aspect of this group is John Banks Jr’s ability to play most of his solos on the fly, making every time he plays feel like the first time you are hearing that song. This is one aspect that makes this group always interesting to listen to. They have never lost sight of where they come from, and who they are. In their small town of about 1000 people, for the past few years, they would put together a Halloween show. They collect donations from local businesses and rent out the town hall. The group supplies drinks, concessions, candy, baked goods, and other prizes. There are raffles, carving contests, costume contests and cakewalks - and Marsyas Complex plays their music. They do it for the children of their town who really need it. It is a way to give back to their community.

Most of their songs have a personal meaning to them with mention of one particular rock ballad that was written telling the story and to honor the memory of John Banks Jr’s mother, Brenda Ludwig, who passed 7 years ago from cancer, and in memory of the passing of JD’s friend, Brian McDonald. This song is called “Everyday”.

With their release of their new single, “World Falls Down”, which is off their new CD “Why For Art Thou”, you will be able to experience that powerhouse sound that hardcore rock fans experience. This song is a about a woman that takes advantage of her man and he knowing that he’s being used. It has a unique blend of heavy metal and hardcore rock that you can totally enjoy no matter what style rock you like. It is full of energy and is relatable to everyone. Between the bass guitar and lead guitar and those drums keeping that heart beat, you have a song that is electrifying to listen to. “Why For Art Thou” has been released in its digital format and is also available in its physical format.
