My first guitar was a classical bought from Joe Gaird (I think) in Newtown Wellington. He had very long fingernails. I couldn't pick it up straight away because of my left handedness. I was pretty happy when the strings were changed around. My second guitar was a Maya dreadnought. Same thing had to happen with the strings. I bought it from the same shop with my pocket money.

Our family was brought up with a drum kit always around. My first professional gigs was as a drummer: dance band in the Horowhenua. While at Victoria University I drummed in a very egocentric Toys from the Attic and then had a great time with The Jonahs.

While down in Queenstown I got involved with the Irish scene, and met another Wellingtonian named Carl McRae. Together we performed an acoustic guitar based band called Dizrhythmia.

We recorded in Dunedin, and had our work completed by Chris Ward. Then he was a starving audio engineer. Now he is with Peter Jackson.

All of a sudden nothing happenend! Until I decided to record for myself.

I find it difficult to think of my efforts represented as a circular piece of plastic. It was a development of my skills in all areas of music. “I just didn’t want to stop playing when the bands stopped and the families took over. I wanted to get better. So much life got in my way."

Flying Nun, Beatles, R.E.M, Tom Petty, Clapton, Staightjacket Fits, Jonahs, Jean Paul Satre Expereince, with a few guitar licks thrown in, could describe my music.

It could also have an awakening of my heritage which you only start to feel when your beginning to mature in years: an English Kiwi tinge. Classic English bands mixed with bands heard in Wellington in the late '80s early 90s, before Bodega, when the Clarendon was king.

Thanks Glenice Hoskins for your vocals on Well You Know 2004.

PHILIP HARTSHORN'S SOLO CD "SHED COLLECTION" NOW AVAILABLE

LATEST PROJECT FROM AOTEAROA, NEW ZEALAND'S, ROCK GUITARIST

SINCE HIS YEARS OF PLAYING UNDER DIFFERENT BAND NAMES, DIZRHYTHMIA, JONAHS, PHILIP HARTSHORN HAS REFINED HIS GUITAR AND DRUMMING, AND PRODUCED THIS HAND MADE COLLECTION OF SONGS.

THE SHED COLLECTION WAS CREATED IN THE BACK OF A CORRUGATED IRON SHED ON A PLOT OF LAND NORTH OF WELLINGTON IN HOROWHENUA. IT WAS A DEVELOPMENT OF PHILS SKILLS IN ALL AREAS OF MUSIC. "I DIDN'T WANT TO STOP PLAYING. I WANTED TO GET BETTER. SO MUCH GOT IN MY WAY".

"FLYING NUN, BEATLES, R.E.M, TOM PETTY, STAIGHTJACKET FITS, JONAHS, JEAN PAUL SATRE EXPEREINCE, WITH A FEW GUITAR LICKS THROWN IN, COULD DESCRIBE MY MUSIC. IT COULD ALSO HAVE BEEN AN AWAKENING OF MY HERITAGE WHICH YOU ONLY START TO FEEL WHEN YOUR BEGINNING TO MATURE IN YEARS: AN ENGLISH KIWI TINGE. CLASSIC ENGLISH BANDS, BOWIE, STONES, MIXED WITH BANDS HEARD IN WELLINGTON IN THE LATE '80S EARLY 90S, BEFORE BODEGA, WHEN THE CLARENDON WAS KING."

"YOU CAN'T GET MORE INDEPENDENT THAN THIS. THESE SONGS HAVE BEEN BUILT TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY. I'D LOVE TO PRODUCE A STUDIO ALBUM. THIS ISN'T IT. BUT IT COULD BE. GOOD SONGS LAST A WHILE."

"I'D LIKE TO GET THE AUDIENCE TO HELP ME ON THIS. TELL ME WHICH SONGS I SHOULD RECORD. HAVE YOUR SAY. I HATE TO THINK OF THE SHED COLLECTION AS DEMOS BUT TO SOME PEOPLE I GUESS THEY ARE. IT DOESN'T QUITE MAKE SENSE TO ME. BUT I'M NOT A SKILLED ENGINEER SO I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT."

"HERE'S THE DEAL. BUY THE SHED COLLECTION, TELL ME WHICH TRACKS YOU LIKE. I'LL SEND YOU THE STUDIO VERSION, WHEN IT'S RECORDED, AS A THANK YOU. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE.... (NO THERE'S NOT!!)."
