SHE, a new CD from
Darryl Gregory.
Newtown singer-songwriter Darryl Gregory has released his first solo CD in seven years, a stunning 13-track concept album which, the artist promises, will prove well worth the wait. SHE, the title of this collection of story songs, is not the usual “he said, she said” relationship tale. Instead it is “more like aural portraits of female archetypes,” says Gregory in a recent interview. “These songs tell stories about women I either know or have dreamed up. ‘She’ is no one person, yet within all women there are shards of each personality these songs speak about. There’s the Mother, the Lover, the Whore. There’s the girl you stepped on and there’s the girl who ran over your heart with a U-Haul truck. There’s the crazy ex and there’s the one you’re with right now that you promise to hold on to with a frenzied grip. I decided to put them all into a sequence that has a thread running through it.” Gregory did and he came up with a cycle of songs that lead the listener on a type of journey: a line drawn from defiance-regret-remorse to acceptance-love-acquiescence. While the listener can take each song as a single and listen to it on its own, Gregory intends for the entire CD to be taken in as a whole. “It starts with a no and ends with a yes,” he says of ‘She’. “Each song is a chapter or a vignette that when put together tell an even greater story. There aren’t too many concept albums coming out anymore, but I loved the challenge of doing it anyway.”
A talented multi-instrumentalist, Gregory plays the majority of those featured on the CD. Besides, vocals, guitars and bass, Gregory also acquits himself well on harmonica, udu drum, trap set, melodica, organ, piano, mandolin, dobro and berimbau. Several of his talented friends also pitched in including Rani Arbo (composer for Daisy Mayhem) on fiddle, Sasha Bogdanowitsch and Wendy Berry on vocals, Debbie Maloney on flute, Justin Hines on drum set and congas and actress Katy Kjellgren who lent her voice-over talents for the spoken word track “No”.
