Chiara Angelicola introduced herself to the world as the powerful frontwoman of the funky pop band Morning Theory. But despite the raucous energy of Morning Theory, Chiara found herself listening to mellower, acoustic, folk-inspired music. Cash, Fiona Apple, Patsy Cline, and Pixies are some of the artists who helped her find herself when Morning Theory decided to take a breather. Chiara’s solo debut, Bird Songs, is all the intimate honest love that pop music fails to capture; A successful outlet of a very complex set of emotions.

Working with producer/musician David Reep (a graduate of Ex’pression College for Digital Arts), Chiara set out to catch and release her true feelings. “It's really healthy and a natural, progressive step to be taking and drawing from all of my real love relationships, not the kind that lend themselves so well to pop nuggets for Morning Theory songs.” Mr. Reep, who cites Townes Van Zandt at the top of a long list of influences, was the perfect partner in this project. His production work shows a great deal of mature restraint. The stage he built for Chiara included no chains to hold her back.

Music goes back a long way for Chiara. She grew up with the sounds of her mother --a Guatemalan jazz musician-- singing and playing piano. Chiara’s first training was all in jazz, and she found her voice on standards, like Sinatra and Holiday before her. With Bird Songs she mates her stunning and versatile voice with apt lyrics that don’t hide behind cliché metaphor. She does not hesitate for one second to call it how she sees it.

Johnny Cash and Fiona Apple are readily apparent in listening to these tracks, but one also hears the emotional intensity of Nick Cave and PJ Harvey. However, the vocal work, especially the harmonies in “These Things,” transcends the entire indie-folk genre. Absent from the gamut of current musical offerings is Chiara’s strut and bluesy growling, and songs like “A Wooden Heart” make her stand out, and will remind Morning Theory fans why they fell in love with Chiara’s voice in the first place.

Chiara’s Bird Songs is playfully morbid. The sound brings to mind the image of a newborn cradled in its aging great-grandparents arms: a juxtaposition of life and death; It sounds remarkably fresh, but it’s steeped in an influential history of great music. Hers are the words we whisper in our heads. “If I wanted to I could let myself cry about most of the love that I write about. It’s the love that makes you crazy if you don’t sing about it.” Bird Songs is not merely a collection of songs about love and honesty; it is their embodiment in sound."

Press Release:
"...The five tracks on Chiara Angelicola’s new Bird Songs EP show her to be a fine vocalist, capable of setting her uncommonly pure voice to Silky, Gutsy, Sad, Sultry or Pissed with the flick of a dial...."-Damon Orion, The Good Times 2007, Santa Cruz

"Angelicola has songs like "Sake Of", which recalls the haunting atmospherics of Portishead, along with the stripped-down, piano-based "Unkind." -Stuart Thornton, Monterey County Weekly, May 10-16, 2007 Edition

"Chiara Angelicola has the voice of a deity..."-Bunny LaValliere, BEAT Newsletter, San Francisco Art Institute

"What stands out like a snowflake in a sauna is that voice: sweet, vulnerable, yet prone to lapse into a bluesy growl..." -Damon Orion, The Good Times 2005, Santa Cruz, CA
