Ephemeral Encounter In The Capital's Anarchist Underground... ended up in a not-so-good part of town. Seems like one needs an invitation to see this band. Found the house and entered through steel doors on the side of the building which led to an open space in the basement: stone walls, concrete floor - not the type of place where you take your shoes off. Everything reminded me of my visit to Hamburg's Hafenstrasse years ago. Arrived just in time to witness final instructions: "Don't throw out your garbage before looking out the window, even if you have good aim. There just might be someone in the can trying to flatten the trash because we want to get maximum mileage out of it." Then the band - guitar, bass and drums, no p.a. - started, sounding like 'tuning of the instruments' and 'sound check' at the same time. But it all came together after just a few moments. A wall of sound, not too loud, very free yet strangely coherent, seemed to push me against the wall. Looked around: the drug of choice was alcohol, however, the vibe one of 'psychedelic conspiracy'. The band played for almost an hour without any breaks. At times they sounded rehearsed but after a while it became clear that every few minutes they relaxed briefly only to return to their original intensity. The 50-or-so people seemed to be into it but did not applaud when the sound stopped in the same way it had started. Their voices took over as if to continue the performance. Heard a couple of whistles and the guy next to me shouted: "deconstruction". Later, someone complimented the bass player: "It was good.", to which he responded: "Think I care?" The whole thing had something liberating, invigorating. So, if you're ever invited to a meeting of "The Ottawa Chapter Of The Funkyfish Anarchist Society"...
